This advanced pre-amplifier can be manually or remotely operated. It is a fully balanced/unbalanced line level source selection unit for selecting and adjusting the signal levels of up to 6 unbalanced and 2 balanced input signal sources and is for use prior to the main high power amplification of a quality hi-fi system. Its features are as follows:
Control is by micro processor providing useful features such as gain level selection of x1.00, x1.5, x1.75, x2.00 individually on each input. When the gain level has been selected, the settings may be stored for each input, therefore it is possible to align the levels for each source in order to avoid dangerously severe signal level changes that could possibly damage loud speakers. This data is written into memory automatically and is not lost when the power is removed but can be altered by the user as often as required. Additionally, when the unit is switched off, the CPA 4000 remembers its last source and output selection and, on switching on again, the unit will reconfigure itself to its stored settings.
To keep the analogue (music) signals pure, the Chord Electronics micro controller acts only to control DC lines which select control relays or the motors that operate the volume or balance potentiometers thereby keeping the stereo signals free from ultra high frequency (UHF) data signal corruption. Each analogue stereo channel has its own independent (dual mono) power supply with DC regulators for each amplification stage. Each stereo channel input selector has its own separate printed circuit board. There are a total of 32 ultra high performance hermetically sealed relays within each unit. The micro controller also has its own independent power supply as have the relays. The CPA 4000 features our own custom electro-luminescent (gas discharge) display with clear 20mm high characters giving a precise, easily visible readout even when using the remote handset at a distance. The display defines the source, output selected, gain setting, volume level and direction of balance adjustment.
The CPA 4000 pre-amplifier also has a signal detect circuit which monitors signals in excess of 50 millivolts measured at the output of the source select stage. This gives an instant visual indication that the source has been selected and the cables from that source are functioning correctly. A missing indicator light confirms either a cable source fault or operating error.
The design of the digital and analogue circuitry has been implemented with great care in decoupling and extensive star earthing with the starring points extending right to each component, in most cases, from each of the two mono star points. Sixteen earth lines go to each of the dual mono right and left channel input select printed circuit boards. There are a total of 4 printed circuit boards within each unit.
